False Modesty
My thinly veiled ardourWished to be ripped
Of its false modesty
Mocked by garish colours
Lipstick, rouge and eyeshadow
Jostled for attention on the cling-wrapped body
Mixed symbols of tradition and modernity
Born of a desire to assert an identity
A return to pure ideals
A chance to wear the badge of struggle
To cure the ills of society
The veil is hailed as a symbol of feminity
Strength in the cloaked numbers
Returning chastity back to bold glances
Alas, my veil is fading
I am too
O symbol of unity
I’ve hung upon the nail
Revealed is my modest hair, greying
Happy at last to breathe air
To don the badge of honour
My womanhood secure
In retirement
I am unveiled
Revealing words, deeds and actions
Substance which speaks louder than clothes...
...God please help me, for I am falling.
